  • Mission

We challenge racism and promote diversity and social equality by telling the story of David Oluwale, who arrived in Leeds, UK, in 1949 from Lagos, Nigeria. David was drowned in the River Aire in 1969. Two policemen were acquitted of his manslaughter, but convicted in 1971 of several assaults on him.
  • Brief history

The charity was stimulated by Professor Caryl Phillips, whose book Foreigners (2007) examined David Oluwale's life and death. Since 2009, we have organised arts events that promote reflection on all of Oluwale's afflictions -- mental ill-health, homelessness, racism and more.
